To the members.

The last meeting of the PPLA executive committee was primarily concerned with the organisation of the IPSC State Titles which PPLA will be hosting.  The discussions around this matter focused on the need to get members to attend the working bees to set up the stages for this competition.  It became evident from past attendance at club competition setups that it is the usual few who are prepared to do the work.  There are two weekends between now and the State Titles.  In those two weekends we have to clear the ranges of props, repair props, build the stages (14 of them) while the facility is being used by other clubs at Little River (We are but part of a larger organisation trying to provide for all its members – SSAA(Vic.)).

There are approximately 130 members in PPLA and the meeting’s discussion revolved around how to get you motivated to help build stages for matches (club, State and National).  It was suggested that a rostering system be tried where 10 members would be rostered for match building on a monthly basis.  That would mean that each member would only have to attend one match build per year. There was scepticism around the table that we would get enough people to attend their rostered day as it was pointed out that very few people currently attend the rostered duty days to clean up the ranges.

Further suggestions were made regarding incentives to attend including a levy of a suitable amount of money which would be returned to the member on completion of their rostered match build day.  It was further suggested that members who did not attend their rostered match build day would forfeit the levy which would be shared amongst the members who did turn up on the day.  It was clearly determined that the club would not be seen to be profiting from the lack of attendance by members for the match building duties.  We don’t need the money; we need the manpower to build the matches.

Any rostering process will include the option for swapping with others to make it more convenient for all concerned.  We are telling you this before we make any decisions to get you perspective and comments.  We have at all times tried to be inclusive of the membership and lately we have found that the level of esprit de corps has been found wanting.  Examples include the “shoot and scoot” attitude of a high proportion of members after each match.  The prize winners don’t even stay to collect their trophies.

We have created the impression that PPLA has the best facilities and will always provide a challenging match at both local club level and at State and National level.  That impression has been created on the backs of a very small number of volunteers.  PPLA is proud of that perception and we hope that pride is shared by all its members
